Group Discussion

What is GD?

Group discussion (GD) is a thorough method for determining a person's eligibility and compatibility for a job, scholarship, or another opportunity. GD evaluates the ideology, demeanour and overall personality of a person. The group members are given a subject to discuss. A number of observers watch the conversation. Through this observation, they assess the participants’ intellectual, behavioural, managerial, and communicative abilities.

You must possess an understanding of the field and the capacity to work in a team as a supervisor or member in order to be admitted to some top colleges, Business Schools, and campus placements following graduating from college or recruiting to a multinational corporation. The group discussion method is a very effective technique to assess a candidate's group-working skills.

 

Types of Group Discussion (GD)

GD can be classified into three main types that are discussed below in detail:

Topic Based

The participants for this conversation are given a topic on which they need to hold the discussion. This explanation is based on real-world job situations. The topics for these discussions fall into one of three categories: factual, controversial, or abstract 

  1. Factual Discussions – These group conversations focus on real-world situations and test a candidate's ability to assimilate information and analyze current events or socioeconomic problems. For instance - The expansion of India's economy since its independence.
  2. Controversial Discussions – These general discussions (GDs) are focused on sensitive topics and examine a candidate's capacity for situational management, temper management, patience, and logical thinking. For instance, Business vs Job
  3. Abstract Discussions – The participants in the group are given a case study to review and discuss during the session. Candidates must present the case study with one another and come to a conclusion on how to handle the problem confronting them. This assists in assessing their capacity for problem-solving, analysis, critical analysis, and creative analysis.

Case-Based

In such discussions, participants are given a case study to read and analyze over the course of a certain amount of time. Candidates must bring up the case study with one another and come to a conclusion on how to handle the problem confronting them. This aids in assessing their capacity for problem-solving, analysis, critical analysis, and creative analysis. You will be provided details regarding the situation, and you will be asked to work together to find a solution. There are neither ideal solutions nor bad responses in the case study. The purpose of the case study is to encourage you to consider the circumstance from numerous perspectives.

  1. Patiently listen to the views of other participants.
  2. Present your thoughts clearly.
  3. Emphasize your points by including examples.
  4. Get in the habit of reading Articles, Essays and Newspapers. 
  5. Your thoughts must match your expressions, voice tone and hand gestures.
